Cranial-Sacral Therapy
Cranio-sacral is a hands on light and gentle therapy that assists the natural healing of all the body’s systems, first discovered in the 1940’s by Dr William Sutherland the pioneer of Cranio Osteopathy it has grown in popular recognition internationally and developed further by another Osteopath physician John.E.Ledger who came across this Cranial rhythm when assisting in Neurosurgery during much research into the connection between the Cranium and Sacrum fluid rhythm he then developed the Cranio-Sacral Therapy. Cranio-Sacral therapy detects imbalances in the cranio sacral system this may be the cause of sensory, motor or neurological dysfunctions. The cranio-sacral system includes the dura mater a tough water proof membrane which surrounds the brain and spinal cord down into the coccyx, this protects the central nervous system an important function is the production, circulation and re-absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which produces a continous rise and full of fluid pressure within the cranio-sacral system, if the pressure is restricted and your body cannot accommodate these changes then the build up can contribute to dysfunction, tension and ill-health.
The treatment is performed with the client lying fully clothed on a couch, the practitioner places their hands gently around the clients head, spine, sacrum and feet, this gentle non-invasive therapy allows the practitioner to tune into the clients cranial rhythm whilst seeking to identify any factors that may be causing restrictions within the body, these restrictions will include scalp, skull, face, body and limbs, then tension within the body will create restricted free flowing movements which in turn involve mechanical or emotional elements. Throughout the treatment self healing will be taking place with slow sutle movements within the body’s realm, this is a very relaxing and calm treatment a time of unwinding of the emotions and body restrictions.
CST uses very light pressure the practitioner places their hands on certain bony structures throughout the body listening and feeling with their hands the Cranio rhythm, allowing time to feel the restrictions within the particular areas of the body, the practitioner will place a slight barrier against the rhythm to guide the body through a self healing action as soon as you touch a person there is change within the system. This can be a very powerful yet relaxing treatment, because of the nature of the therapy it can be applied to anyone of any age. Cranio-sacral addresses underlying problems and imbalances that may have been there for a very long time, it helps restore fluid exchange, promotes self healing and general well-being, soft tissue response allows the body to adjust, correct and re-align itself through subtle, light movements. The client may feel and become aware of this release taken place.
